Used to pack green sand by stomping it with my boots back in the 90s
Now I just hit the button on a jolt-squeeze machine and it's done in 10 seconds. Boss put one in last year after I complained about my knees aching. Anyone else miss the old way or am I just being sentimental?

Did you ever have to fix the sand that got too dry from the machine jolting all the moisture out though? I hear you on the knees, mine are shot too, but there's something about stomping it down that let me feel the mold and know it's packed right around the pattern. The jolt-squeeze is fast but I swear I get more rejects now because the machine doesn't adjust for the little differences in the sand batch.

Used to tell the old guys I was glad to see the jolt-squeeze come in. I was one of those guys who said the new stuff was for people who couldn't handle real work. Then my back went out last winter from leaning over a flask all day, and my boss let me try the machine for a week because I could barely stand. Never went back. My knees don't ache anymore and I can actually walk my dog after a shift.
