The way we handle green sand moisture changed after a bad pour in Toledo

We used to just go by feel and a quick squeeze test, but after a whole batch of scrap castings from a job in Toledo last fall, I got a proper moisture teller. It's a little digital gauge from Wagner, and now I check every batch before we start molding. The difference in surface finish on the cope side is night and day... Has anyone else switched to using a meter, or do you still trust the old hand methods?

Had a similar thing happen with treated lumber. Supplier sent a batch that felt dry but the moisture content was way off. Warped every fence panel we built that week. Now we use a pin meter on every delivery, no exceptions.

Yeah that's smart to check every load. We got burned once too when a whole stack of deck boards swelled up after install. Now it's just part of the routine, like checking for straight edges. Saves way more time than fixing the mess later.

Read a whole article about that, @nelson.finley.

Moisture meters can lie if the wood's surface is too hot.
