Rant: I was pouring my greensand way too wet for years
Always aimed for that 'perfect' squeeze test ball. Then last month, a mold from a new guy held its shape way better than mine. He showed me his sand. Felt like damp beach sand, not mud. My cores have been cleaner ever since. What's your go-to feel for the right moisture level?

Heard an old timer say it should clump in your fist but crumble apart easily. Honestly changed my whole approach.

Wish I'd heard that tip before I spent a whole season watering my garden like it was a desert. My poor tomatoes were basically swimming. That clump and crumble thing is such a simple way to picture it. Makes way more sense than just guessing. I was definitely overcomplicating it for no good reason.

Johnfoster, I was the same way for years. I'd just turn the hose on and figure more water meant happier plants. Then I saw my neighbor's soil after a rain, how it held together but broke apart without being muddy. Tried it with my own raised bed and the difference was crazy. My peppers finally stopped looking so sad and yellow.
