Hot take: preheating your ladle longer makes for better pours

At the Shelby Street shop last Tuesday, I rushed a ladle preheat and got a cold shank that cracked the mold, so now I let it sit in the furnace for a full 10 minutes before pulling it out, has anyone else had a similar issue with thermal shock?

Blew it myself last month with a too quick preheat and ended up with a puddle of bronze on the floor. Thought I was being clever saving two minutes, turns out I was just making a mess.

Respectfully, I see it a little different. A quick preheat can work if you watch the color like a hawk and pull back the second it shifts. Maybe the issue wasn't the speed but missing that split second window. What kind of torch setup were you running?

Ever just hold the ladle in till it glows like the sun? That fixed it for me.
