Got called out on my riser gating setup last week
I was pouring a set of bronze bushings, using a single 1/2-inch riser on each. A guy from the next bay over, Mike, walked by and said 'You're gonna get shrinkage with that, feed it from the side.' I argued my way was fine, but he showed me a photo on his phone of a similar part he did with a side gate that came out perfect. So I tried it his way on the next pour. The part cooled way more even and the finish was better. Anyone else had a veteran worker change their mind on something basic?

Old-timer showed me a better vent spot once.

That old-timer's advice is probably outdated by now. Building codes and materials change, so his go-to spot could cause more problems than it fixes. I've seen people follow old advice and end up with drafts or moisture issues in the wrong wall. Sometimes you're better off trusting the modern manual over a story from twenty years ago.

My buddy Jake tried that old trick with the vent location and ended up with mold behind his drywall six months later. Cost him a small fortune to rip it all out and fix. Sure, the old guy meant well, but codes have changed so much for vapor barriers and insulation that what worked then is a gamble now. I'd rather trust the updated specs than guess based on someone's memory from the 90s.
