My record collection hit 500 albums and I realized I own more forgotten 90s stuff than classics.

It happened last week when I logged a new find. I have maybe 50 well-known records, but the rest are things like 'Mazzy Star's 'So Tonight That I Might See' or the Afghan Whigs' 'Gentlemen'. Anyone else have a section of their shelf that's just a time capsule of a specific era?

That's actually the most interesting part of a collection. Those "forgotten" albums often capture the real sound of the decade better than the big hits ever did. They show what people were actually listening to in their cars and dorm rooms. My own 90s section is full of those one-off alt-rock albums that never got a second press. It feels more honest than just having the same ten classics everyone owns.

Totally agree with @the_vera, it's like finding a time capsule. My old CD binder is full of random one-hit wonders that just are the late 90s for me.

and don't get me started on the CD binder itself. mine is one of those giant ones that zips up, and I'm pretty sure it weighs more than my laptop. it's got a copy of "I Will Buy You a New Life" by Everclear right next to some random techno mix from a gas station. that binder is basically a museum of bad decisions and questionable taste, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
