Unpopular opinion: I think we're all sleeping on carnations for wedding work
I had a bride last month with a tight budget, maybe $800 total for flowers, and she wanted a classic look. I gave her two options: go with the safe, popular choice of roses and hydrangeas, which would eat up the whole budget fast, or let me build her arrangements around premium carnations. I'm talking the big, fluffy ones, not the gas station kind. I went with the carnations, tinted some of them a soft blush, and mixed them with seeded eucalyptus and some filler. The final look was amazing, full and soft, and she saved almost $300. But I know some folks think carnations are cheap or dated. Has anyone else tried pushing them as a main flower lately, or am I fighting a losing battle?

Didn't a big florist on Instagram just do a whole series on modern carnation designs?

Ugh, yes, and it was honestly such a relief to see. Carnations got stuck with such a cheap, outdated reputation for way too long. That series really showed how gorgeous and textural they can be when you treat them like a real flower. Felt like a public service for everyone tired of the same old rose-heavy arrangements.

Actually, it was a few florists working together. The series was a group project to change minds about carnations. They really did show how versatile those flowers can be.
