Tried a self-leveling compound for the first time on a job in Austin...

I had this old house with a sunken living room that dipped a full 3/4 of an inch in the middle. Usually I'd just shim the hell out of everything and hope for the best, but it took forever and the customer kept complaining about a squeak. Last Tuesday I finally sucked it up and poured some self-leveler after watching a few videos... ended up taking maybe 45 minutes to mix and pour and it came out flat as glass. Has anyone else found a big time saver like that? I wasted years fighting with plywood shims for nothing.

The real hidden benefit of self-leveler is how it fixes soundproofing issues too. That sunken living room you mentioned probably had hollow spots under the subfloor that acted like a drum for every footstep. The compound fills all those air gaps, so the floor becomes way more solid and quiet. Did you notice less echo or footsteps carrying weirdly after you poured it?

Self-leveler is the closest thing to magic in this trade.
