I finally gave up on my old belt sander for floor prep

For years I kept fixing my old 3x21 belt sander, thinking I was saving cash. Last month, it died mid-job on a big oak refinish in Springfield. I lost a full day of work, about $400, waiting for parts and then just buying a new one anyway. The new orbital sander I got does the same work in half the time with way less dust. I wish I had just replaced the old machine two years ago. Has anyone else held onto a tool way too long and cost themselves money?

Sometimes the old gear just feels right, even if it costs you.

My dad's 1987 Skilsaw finally ate a bearing last summer. That sentimental value cost me three days on a Cedar Rapids remodel.

That sentimental value thing is real, but it's a trap. You end up paying for repairs with both money and lost time, which is way worse. My uncle did the same with his truck, fixing every little thing until the engine blew. He spent more on patches than a new truck payment. Sometimes the old stuff just needs to be let go before it hurts you.
