Rant: My $15 thrift store dresser almost fell apart on move-in day

I grabbed a solid oak dresser from Goodwill for $15 last month, thought I scored big. Got it home and the second drawer caught halfway, then the whole side panel popped loose when I tried to fix it. I was about to trash it but my neighbor came over and showed me the dowels were just dry rotted, not snapped. He had me drill out the old ones, glue in new 3/8 inch birch dowels from Home Depot for $4, and clamp it overnight. That dresser now holds all my heavy winter clothes without a wobble. Anyone else ever almost throw away something that just needed a cheap part?

I've definitely been the dummy on the verge of trashing a $4 fix.

Yeah but it's usually way cheaper than the new tool I'd buy to avoid fixing the $4 part...
