My neighbor laughed at me for using a heat gun on old paint

I spent 2 hours with a scraper and chemical stripper on an old desk I found at a thrift shop near me. My neighbor came over, saw me hunched over it, and just goes 'why aren't you using a heat gun?' I told him it would scorch the wood or something. He showed me his technique with a cheap Wagner gun from Harbor Freight, took him maybe 20 minutes to strip a whole chair. I borrowed it today and finished the desk in under an hour. Has anyone else stubbornly avoided a tool that would've made things way easier?
