My brother-in-law's old fridge almost started a fire in his garage

I mean, we were just talking about his new freezer when he mentioned the old Kenmore's compressor was making a weird hum for months. He said he kept unplugging it to 'let it rest' and plugging it back in, which is apparently a huge risk for an electrical short. It hit different because he's usually so careful with stuff, and that fridge was from 2005. Has anyone else had a close call with an old appliance like that?

Wow, that's a scary thought. People forget that garages get way hotter than our air-conditioned houses, and that extra heat really strains an old fridge's parts. It's like running it in an oven until something gives out.

And the extra dust out there doesn't help either.
