My brother-in-law told me to just buy a new lamp instead of fixing it.

I was trying to rewire a vintage ceramic lamp from a garage sale in Austin, and he walked in while I had all the parts laid out on the kitchen table. He looked at it for a second and said, "That's a waste of time, you can get a new one for twenty bucks." What's a good way to explain why fixing old things is worth the effort?

Ugh, that's so frustrating. I just tell people it's not about the money, it's about saving something cool from the landfill (and the satisfaction when it works again).

Yeah, that's the real win right there. The money saved is just a nice bonus on top of the fix. It just feels good to bring something back to life.

Honestly I used to be all about "just buy a new one it's cheaper" but watching my buddy bring an old Game Boy back to life last week totally flipped my thinking. The look on his face when that screen lit up was worth more than any money saved.
