Just realized my local hardware store has a free tool rental day every Saturday
I was in Ace Hardware on Main Street last weekend trying to fix a wobbly chair leg and saw a sign about it. They let you borrow things like pipe wrenches or tile cutters for up to four hours at no cost if you buy something small. Has anyone else used a service like this for a home repair job?

Actually sounds like a total hassle waiting to happen. You get a free tool but have to BUY something first, so it's not really free. Plus you only get four hours, and what if the job takes longer or you need a different tool halfway through? Now you're stuck with a half-finished project and a random purchase you didn't really want. These programs seem nice but set you up for more stress.

Is that a common thing now? I saw a news piece about a library of things starting up in a nearby city. They had power tools you could check out like a book, drills and sanders and stuff. My neighbor used a similar program at a community workshop to borrow a carpet cleaner. Saved him a ton over renting from the grocery store. These small local setups seem way more helpful than the big box stores.

My local library started a tool library last year and it's been a lifesaver. I borrowed a drain snake for a clogged sink and it saved me a hundred bucks on a plumber. The key is to watch their online calendar and reserve the tool a few days ahead, because the good stuff goes fast. Just make sure you clean everything really well before you return it.
