I wasted $80 on a 'universal' TV bracket that didn't fit my specific wall studs, so is it better to buy cheap generic parts and modify them, or always pay more for the exact model?

I had to return it and buy the proper bracket, which cost another $60, so I'm out $140 total and a whole Saturday.
