I thought my old lamp was a lost cause until I saw a video about switch repair

About two months ago, my favorite reading lamp from college just stopped turning on. I was ready to toss it, figuring the wiring was shot. Then I watched a tutorial from a guy in Austin who showed how to test a socket switch with a basic multimeter. I found the exact same push-through switch at the hardware store for under five dollars. Soldering it in was way easier than I thought. Has anyone else fixed a lamp by just replacing that little switch inside?

My buddy Dave had the same thing happen with his desk lamp last year. He was about to buy a new one until I told him to check the switch first, just like @kim.sandra said about tutorials making it less scary. The old one was full of dust and one wire had burned out. He got a new switch, watched a video, and had it working in twenty minutes. The hardest part for him was just getting the old solder off the terminals cleanly. Now he won't shut up about fixing other stuff.

That's awesome you saved your lamp! Honestly used to think anything electrical was way over my head and not worth the trouble. Seeing someone do it step by step makes it seem so much less scary though. Might have to look for some tutorials myself next time something breaks.

Kim, that "step by step" approach is key, so what was the hardest part of the soldering for you?
