Update: My prop labeling system failed until I tried color codes.
Color-coding makes finding props much faster.

Totally, color codes saved my sanity back in my theater days. I had a big trunk of hand props and used red stickers for weapons, blue for letters, and green for food items. Stopped the frantic digging during blackouts cold. What colors did you go with?

Heard my buddy in college theater used a similar trick. He picked yellow for breakable stuff, black for tools, and white for costume pieces. During one show, the lights cut out and he still found the right prop by feel alone. Said those color dots kept him from panicking backstage. Watching him, I finally understood why organization matters in chaos.

Backstage at my old community theater, we went with orange for anything that made noise, purple for paperwork, and plain brown for the heavy set pieces. That system got us through more than one unexpected blackout without a total meltdown.
