TIL that a prop master I know switched from 3D printed guns to resin casting for a show last year and the difference in close-ups is insane.

Wasn't there a whole thing about resin props holding up better under hot lights?

Resin's got a nice weight to it. I saw a guy use it for fake rocks once, looked real enough to trip over.

i remember reading a breakdown from a props forum about how 3d printed stuff shows layer lines even after sanding, especially under bright studio lights. the guy said resin casting lets you get a much smoother finish without all that post work. apparently the heat from the lights can also make some 3d printed materials warp or get brittle over time too. ive heard resin holds up way better for that, plus you can add fillers to match the weight of real metal or stone. that weight thing is huge for actors handling the props, makes them move more natural on camera.
