Rant: leveling rod saved my back but wrecked my timeline on a 200ft run

Honestly, I tried using a laser leveling rod for the first time last Thursday on a big chain link job in Austin. I figured it would make my posts perfectly straight without all the bending and checking. Thing is, it took me almost twice as long because I kept second guessing the laser line and adjusting posts. I ended up having to re-set three posts when the battery died and i noticed they were off by half an inch. What do you guys use for leveling on long runs, a string line or something else?

Oh man, is a half inch off really worth scrapping three whole posts over? I figure unless you're building a NASA launch pad, a little wobble's not gonna be the end of the world. Maybe just grab a beer and call it good next time.

Wait, does a half inch wobble actually bother people that much? I've left worse gaps in my own deck and it's still standing five years later. A little character never hurt anything.
