Pro tip: stop pretending gravel backfill is optional for gate posts

I used to think it was just upselling until I had to reset a 6 foot gate near Sioux Falls 6 months ago and now I won't set a gate post without at least a 4 inch gravel base, has anyone else had their mind changed on a specific step like this?

Hold up Ive set plenty of gate posts with just packed dirt and they're still standing 10 years later. Pretty sure the gravel thing got popular because it sounds professional but never had one shift on me.

Wait, are you saying the whole gravel thing is just some fancy internet trend and not actually necessary? @carr.willow Id be curious to know what kind of soil youve got though because around here the clay would crack like crazy if I tried just packed dirt.
