Been setting posts with crushed gravel for 8 years until a soil test on a job in Vermont showed I was basically making my own swamp
The soil guy pointed out the fines in my gravel were holding water against the wood and rotting everything out, so now I only use washed stone and has anyone else had a client question why you charge more for clean rock?

Switched to washed stone three years ago after pulling up a rotted post with mud caked on it. Clients always question the price jump until I show them the difference in a bucket of water. The fines turn to sludge and hold moisture right against the wood. Saves them money in the long run.

It's funny how this same principle shows up everywhere once you start looking, like how cheap cooking oil gums up your kitchen vent hood versus the good stuff that actually drains away clean.
