A client in Denver called my cedar fence 'too perfect' and it actually made sense after I thought about it.
They said the perfectly straight lines and uniform spacing looked unnatural against their rustic property, so now I intentionally vary the board gaps by an eighth of an inch and let some grain show more, which honestly looks better for certain homes.

It's like how new jeans look stiff until they get broken in, that perfect sheen just feels wrong.

Oh man, that new jean feeling is the worst! It reminds me of getting a stiff new work jacket, @rose_hart31, that squeaks every time you move. You just can't wait for it to get a little dirty and soft so it actually feels like yours. That perfect look never lasts, and honestly, it's not even comfortable.

Man I used to be all about that perfect pristine look, thought it showed craftsmanship or whatever. But after reading this it totally clicked for me, a fence that looks too perfect stands out in a bad way against older homes or lots of trees. Kinda like how new sneakers look dumb until they get a little scuffed up and actually fit your feet right. Gotta say I love the idea of varying the gaps by just a tiny bit, makes it look like it belongs there instead of just being plopped down.
