Watching a rainstorm in Seattle wrecked my view on 'practical' fabrics

I was stuck outside Pike Place Market when a downpour hit, and I saw this woman in a gorgeous linen dress that just soaked up water and clung to her. On the other side, someone in a waxed cotton jacket looked dry but miserable and stiff. It made me think: should design always prioritize looking good over actual function, or is there a perfect middle? What's your take on form versus real-world use?

Hunt.rowan hit it right - the middle ground can feel like you're just sacrificing both sides. I got caught in a surprise storm last fall wearing a jacket that was supposed to be "breathable and waterproof" and came out damp and clammy. Makes me wonder if we're all just chasing a unicorn fabric that doesn't really exist yet.

Ever notice how the "right" fabric depends on the day? I got caught in a drizzle wearing a tech shell that breathed great but looked like a trash bag. Sometimes the middle ground just feels like giving up a bit of both.

Yeah, the "middle ground" thing is so true. It makes me wonder if we're asking the wrong question. Maybe instead of one perfect fabric, we need a system. Like, a good base layer that handles sweat, then a simple, packable shell you only pull out when the sky opens up. That way you're not wearing the trash bag look all day, just when you really need it.
