Reading a book on textile history, I was shocked to learn that the average wedding dress in the 1950s used over 25 yards of fabric.
Found this in a footnote of a book from the library, and it's made me rethink how I approach volume and silhouette in my own formalwear sketches, so what's the most surprising historical detail that's changed your design process?

I mean, 25 yards is a lot, but is it really that shocking? People just used more fabric back then. Idk, maybe it's just me but I feel like we overthink this stuff now. It's cool info, but I don't think it needs to totally change how you sketch.

Read an article about how Victorian skirts needed like, a whole roll of horsehair braid in the hem just to make them swing right. Totally changed how I draft patterns now, I focus on the inside structure first. Kinda get what @seth_green85 means about not overthinking, but seeing the actual materials list from back then was a game changer for me lol.
