PSA: I keep seeing designers use the wrong seam allowance for stretch knits and it ruins the whole garment

Worked on a project for a local dance group last week, and the sample they gave me had puckered seams everywhere. The designer used a standard 5/8 inch allowance on a four-way stretch fabric. It pulls and looks cheap. I had to recut everything with a 1/4 inch allowance and a narrow zigzag stitch. How is this not basic knowledge? What's the worst sewing mistake you've had to fix?

Yeah, I read a blog post that said using a straight stitch on stretch fabric is basically asking for popped seams. It doesn't let the material move at all, so the thread just snaps. That's probably why your sample was all puckered.

That blog post is totally right about the thread snapping, but there's another big problem people miss. The needle itself can wreck stretch fabric if it's the wrong type. A regular point pushes the fibers apart instead of sliding through them, which weakens the whole seam area over time. Have you tried using a ballpoint or stretch needle for those kinds of projects?

Yeah, @the_vera is right about the needle too. I switched to a ballpoint needle on my last batch of jersey knit projects and it made a huge difference, no more skipped stitches or fiber damage.
