My old professor said to never use black thread on navy fabric. I tried it on a blazer last month and he was completely right.

My grandpa ran a tailor shop in Baltimore for forty years. He taught me to use black thread on navy wool all the time. It gives a sharper, cleaner line than matching navy thread, which can look muddy. The contrast is so subtle it just makes the stitching look crisp. I've done it on at least a dozen suits and the result is always perfect. I guess it just comes down to different schools of thought.

My tailor in Chicago swears by dark navy thread instead.

Dark navy isn't really a thing, it's just navy with a weird name.
