I was struggling with making a structured jacket look less stiff

I was working on a blazer design and the shoulder pads kept making it look boxy, like something from the 80s. After three tries with different interfacing, I watched a video from a designer in Seoul who suggested cutting the pads at a 45-degree angle instead of straight across. I tried it with my next muslin and it totally changed the drape, the shoulders looked softer but still had shape. Has anyone else tried cutting shoulder pads on the bias for a more modern look?

That bias cut trick makes me wonder about the pad fabric itself.

Has anyone tried using a slightly stiffer linen for the base layer? I once used an old bedsheet on a whim and it gave the whole thing a weird crinkle that actually looked kind of cool.

Wow, I wish I could get my own shoulders to drape that nicely.
