I finally told my friend Sarah that her 'wearable art' piece looked like a melted trash bag

We were at a gallery opening in Portland last month, and she was showing this huge, shapeless black vinyl dress. I said it felt more like a statement about waste than fashion, which honestly hurt her feelings (I know, I know). But it made me think, when does a design idea cross the line from being bold to just being a costume? Has anyone else had a moment where they just couldn't get behind a friend's design vision?

Sometimes the trash bag is just a trash bag.

Honestly it's just clothes, not a peace treaty. If she likes her melted trash bag look that's her business. You don't have to get behind every weird idea your friends have.

Gotta disagree hard here. When your bestie walks out looking like a melted trash bag, it's not just her wearing a shirt, it's her representing y'all's friendship in public. I've had to sit across from my girl at brunch while she wore those horrible neon leggings from 2013 and honestly I felt secondhand embarrassment. Supporting a friend means sometimes you gotta nod and smile through the bad choices, not just throw up your hands and say "you do you.

Wendy674 has a point, but I used to be way more critical before my own weird project got roasted.
