Hot take: elastic waistbands are ruining good trouser design
I was looking at some vintage patterns from the 70s last month and noticed how much structure those old trousers had. Compare that to today where every other pair of pants has a giant elastic waist with no shape. It's lazy design honestly. We traded fit for comfort and lost something important. Has anyone else tried adding darts or a proper waistband to a modern pattern and seen how much better the silhouette looks?

Huh, that's an interesting point. I've been sewing for years and have messed around with modifying modern patterns. But here's what I'm wondering: when you add darts and a real waistband to a modern pattern, does it actually improve the fit through the hips and seat, or do you end up with weird pulling across the back? I've run into that problem more than once.
