A client told me my color choices were 'too safe' for her line

I was working on a small capsule collection for a local boutique owner, and I kept picking navy, cream, and gray. She looked at my mood board and said, 'This feels like a hotel uniform, not my brand.' That hit hard. So I swapped the navy for a deep plum and added a pop of rust orange as an accent color. The whole collection feels more alive now, and she loved it. Has anyone else had a client push them out of their comfort zone with color?

Oh man, that's the best kind of feedback. It's easy to fall back on neutrals because they're a safe bet, but a client calling you out forces you to actually solve the problem. Plum and rust sound like a killer combo, way more memorable than another navy and cream set. Those pushes are what make a project go from good to really special, even if it stings a bit at first.

Yeah, exactly what @nathan_patel said about it making the project special. That safe zone is real, and sometimes you don't even see you're in it until someone points it out. I've found those pushes, even when they feel harsh, usually mean the client really gets their own audience and you just have to trust that. It's not about your taste, it's about solving their problem. Plum and rust does sound way more like a real brand with a point of view than another neutral set. Did you find yourself liking the new colors more once you saw them all together?
