Overheard a guy at the tack shop say he trims his own horses to save money, and it got me thinking about liability.

He said he saves about $80 a trim but I wonder how many people out there are doing their own hoof care without realizing the long term risks to the horse's soundness, has anyone else run into clients who tried this and then needed professional help to fix something?

Most folks don't realize bad trims can cause lifelong lameness.

My first horse got a trim so bad I called it the "bootleg chop" behind the farrier's back. He took off way too much toe and left the heels high, the poor thing was walking like a drunk toddler for a week. Took months and a better farrier to undo the damage and I STILL feel guilty about it. So yeah, I totally agree with you - a bad trim is basically a slow motion disaster for their feet.
