Found a nail way too close to the white line on a draft horse last Thursday
It was a big Percheron in for a reset. My boss said 'that's a bruise waiting to happen' and had me pull it and start over. How do you guys handle it when the old nail holes are already crowding the good spots?

Man, that's the worst. I've had to just go up a shoe size before to get fresh metal, even if it looks a little goofy for a week. Better than a lame horse.

Funny enough I tried that leather pad trick once and ended up with a hoof that looked like a soggy boot liner. My farrier had a good laugh at me, and @sethc12, your Old Pete might be right that it buys time, but all I got was a stinky mess and a horse that was even more touchy on gravel. Learned my lesson the hard way - now I just own the big shoe look and call it my horse's "clown phase." My mare didn't mind, but I sure felt goofy explaining it to the neighbor.

Old Pete at the feed store said he once used a leather pad for a few cycles to let the hoof wall grow out past the old holes. Does that actually work or does it just trap moisture?
