The new library downtown has all its elevator controllers in a glass room on the main floor.

I was there yesterday and watched a kid press the call button, then stare through the glass at the relays clicking for a solid minute, which made me wonder if we're missing a chance to show people how this stuff actually works (you know, maybe get more folks interested in the trade).

Totally agree... I stood there watching those relays click for a few minutes myself. That's the kind of thing that makes you curious.
