Stumbled on a stat about elevator rope replacement cycles that surprised me
I was reading through some old ASME A17.1 code notes last night and found out that traction elevator hoist ropes can actually last 20+ years in low-traffic buildings. I've always heard 10-15 years max from the guys in my local union hall in Austin. Has anyone else run into ropes going way past what you'd expect?

Man, I've seen ropes in a 12-story office building go 18 years easy before they even thought about swapping them. Just keep an eye on the wear patterns and lubrication, age alone isn't always the tell.

Right, so the union guys in Austin are just trying to keep themselves busy I guess? 20 years is a solid run for a rope but I bet the building manager was sweating bullets every time someone sneezed near the elevator. Guess the old "replace it when it looks sketchy" rule beats some made up calendar date.
