Saw a repair shop in Austin using a $20 hot air station on a MacBook logic board

One side says it's a total hack job that'll damage the board, the other says it gets the job done for simple reflows. What's your take on cheap tools for serious repairs?

That $20 tool probably works fine for most jobs. People just like to gatekeep with expensive gear.

Agree with Lisa, gatekeeping is real. That twenty dollar station can handle basic stuff like reflowing a loose HDMI port or fixing a cracked solder joint. It's like saying you need a pro saw to cut a 2x4. Sure, the expensive gear has better control for big chips, but for most small shops, the cheap tool gets the work done and paid for.

Blame the burnt pads on @hugo50 when that cheap station cooks the board.
