Finally got a proper hot air station and it's a total game changer for SMD work
For years I was using a cheap $40 rework gun from Harbor Freight, which was fine for big stuff but I'd always burn a pad or two on small QFN chips. Last month I finally invested in a Quick 861DW station, and the difference is night and day. The precise temp control and steady airflow let me pull a 48-pin chip from a Nintendo Switch board on my first try without any damage. What's your go-to tool that you waited too long to buy?

Game changer" feels like a stretch. My old cheap gun does the job fine once you learn its quirks. Honestly, I think people just like buying new gear.

Oh man, I read a forum post about this exact thing last week. The guy said his cheap hot air tool was fine until he tried a modern board with lead-free solder. Upgrading to a real station with good airflow control was the only fix that worked for him. Makes total sense now.

Notice how that pattern shows up everywhere now. My dad's old lawnmower runs forever, but try fixing something built after 2015 and you're buying a whole new tool just to deal with one tiny plastic clip.
