Dropped my phone in a puddle on vacation in Florida, tried the rice trick and it just got sticky.

Last month I was fixing a guy's smart TV and he asked if I ever bother with those desiccant packs from shoe boxes, and I realized I've been throwing them away for years when they could probably help dry out water damage better than rice.

Wiped off what I could and then threw my phone in a ziplock bag with those silica packs from about 10 pairs of shoes I had in the closet. Left it overnight and it was good as new the next morning. I've got a little bag of them stashed in my glovebox now, they're handy for foggy headlights too if you ever get moisture inside. That rice trick never did me any favors either, just made everything crusty.

Realized this a few years ago about those silica packs from beef jerky too. It's wild how we ignore the simple stuff that's literally designed to do exactly what we need.

@hall.ruby that's exactly what got me thinking too. It's like we spend all this money on fancy gadgets and organizers when the stuff we already have (like those silica packs or even old shoeboxes) works perfectly fine. We're brainwashed by marketing to think we need special "solutions" when the simplest things are staring us right in the face. I've started keeping a little stash of those packs in my tackle box now, works way better than anything I've bought from a store.
