Shoutout to the Klein NCVT-3 for saving me from a live wire mix-up

I was replacing a light fixture in a 1950s house in Springfield and the old wiring colors didn't match modern code. My non-contact tester beeped on what I thought was the neutral, which turned out to be a switched hot someone had taped black. I always double-check with my meter now, but what's your go-to method for verifying wires in old homes?

Old houses always have a story to tell, don't they?

Yeah, old wiring is no joke. Like @taylor.jessica said, they've got stories, and some of them are shocking. My go-to is always test, then test again with a meter.
