Overheard a contractor in line at the supply house complaining about 'smart' breakers

He was telling his buddy that a new build he's wiring has a full panel of them, and the homeowner wants every circuit monitored through an app. The guy said it took him an extra two hours just to get the system talking to the Wi-Fi. It made me think we're adding a lot of points of failure for a feature most people won't use. Has anyone else had to install a whole panel of these things, and was it worth the hassle?

Wait, is he talking about smart breakers or a whole panel monitor? Because slapping a clamp-on monitor on a normal panel is way easier than dealing with those fancy individual breakers.

Good question. I was all about the clamp-on monitor too, cheaper and simple. Then I saw how the smart breakers track each circuit without any guesswork. That detail changed my mind, you get the exact data for everything.

Yeah, I get that too. nora10, I think you're right that swapping out the whole panel for smart breakers is a bigger job than just adding a clamp on monitor. But for me, it was the same thing Henry saw. I had a clamp on sensor once and it just gave me a total house number, which was useless when I was trying to figure out why my basement lights were sucking up power. These smart breakers give you per circuit data without any guessing games, which is a game changer if you're like me and hate not knowing what's what. I ended up going with them because peace of mind was worth the extra effort, honestly. The setup was a pain, but now I sleep better knowing my garage heater isn't secretly running my bill up.
