Just noticed something odd about the wiring in a 1920s house in Cincinnati

They had old knob and tube still active in the attic, but someone had spliced modern Romex into it with wire nuts. The insulation on the old cloth wire was crumbling right at the junction. Anyone run into this kind of half-finished upgrade before?

Used to think those old splices were fine. Seeing that crumbling insulation changed my mind real quick. That's a fire waiting to happen.

Ever wonder if the heat from modern appliances speeds up that old wire rot? @nancy275 is right about the fire risk, but newer stuff running on ancient circuits might be making it worse. That insulation just can't handle the extra load like it used to.
