I thought I could save time by not labeling a panel and it cost me $300

I was in a hurry on a rewire job and just wrote circuit numbers on the inside of the panel door with a marker. A month later, the homeowner needed a new outlet and I had to trace every single wire to find the right breaker. It took me three hours of paid time I couldn't bill for. What's your go-to method for labeling so it actually lasts?

Guess the marker wasn't permanent enough...

Three hours just to find one breaker? That's brutal, man. You wrote the numbers on the inside of the door with a regular marker? Those things wipe right off with a little cleaner or even just your thumb. I use the Brady labels with the clear plastic cover, the kind you stick on. They cost a few bucks but they last for years.

Yeah those Brady labels sound solid, but honestly after three hours of searching I'd probably just use a chisel like Margaret said. At least then the numbers would be permanent, even if the door isn't.
