Had to rewire a whole kitchen in a 1920s house this week and found cloth wire spliced with electrical tape from the 70s.

Man, that's just old work. I've seen way worse in those houses. Cloth wire with tape splices is pretty normal for a quick fix back then. I found knob and tube wrapped in duct tape once. That kitchen job sounds like a Tuesday.

Yeah I used to think that way too until I saw a cloth wire splice start smoking behind a wall. Totally changed my mind on "quick fixes".
