Had a homeowner in Boise tell me to "just twist the wires tighter" instead of using wire nuts

And then you gotta think about the long game. What happens when that homeowner sells the place and the next buyer's inspector finds a bunch of twisted wires with no caps? That's an instant fail and a huge red flag. Plus, if there's ever a fire from a bad connection, the insurance company is gonna dig into every single thing that was done wrong. They'll use that homeowner's "advice" as a way to deny the whole claim. So not only is the house potentially unsafe, but the person who follows that advice could be on the hook for thousands of dollars in damage. It's just stupidity all the way down.

Laugh out loud at that and then ask him if he twists his romex connections tighter instead of using junction boxes too. Some people think being frugal means reinventing basic safety standards on a whim. Pretty sure that's how you end up with a house that burns down while saving fifty cents on wire nuts.

Yeah just tell him flat out that code is code for a reason. I've seen too many melted connections from people who thought they could save a buck. A wire nut is like a dollar for a pack of 10 at Home Depot. Not worth having your insurance deny a claim cause you did some hillbilly wiring.
