Paid $800 for a home inspection that missed a cracked foundation last month...

I just closed on a cute bungalow in the Hazeldean area and the inspector said everything was fine... turns out there's a hairline crack in the basement wall that's letting in water every time it rains hard. Has anyone else had luck getting their money back from an inspector who missed something obvious?

$800 is pretty cheap for a home inspection around here. Last time I paid $1,100 and the guy still missed a slow leak in the main stack. Inspectors usually have contracts that limit their liability to the fee you paid them, so even if they missed something big, you're probably only getting that $800 back at most. Plus those hairline cracks are honestly pretty common in older homes around this area especially with the clay soil shifting. Maybe try sealing it yourself with some hydraulic cement before going after the inspector over something that might not be their fault.

Solid sympathy from me on this one. That slow leak thing is exactly the kind of thing that keeps me up at night when I'm dealing with property stuff. You pay good money for someone to look at everything and they still miss something that ends up costing way more than the inspection fee. In my experience, those disclaimers they make you sign are pretty airtight too, which makes it sting even more. Clay soil is a real pain around here, I've seen foundation cracks open up and close again with the seasons like clockwork. Your point about sealing it yourself with hydraulic cement is actually solid advice, I've done that on a couple of units and it held up fine for years with no issues.
