TIL a trick for old window frames in my Bonnie Doon house
My 1950s windows were painted shut for years. I thought I needed to replace the whole thing. A guy at Totem on 99th Street told me to score the paint line with a utility knife, then tap the sash with a rubber mallet. Did it on a south facing window last Tuesday. It popped open smooth, no damage. Anyone know a good place in town to get replacement sash cords now?

Hold up, that trick is a total gamble on old wood. You got lucky it didn't splinter the whole rail. Forcing a painted-shut window can crack the glass or wreck the balance, then you're for sure buying a new sash. I'd always call a pro for a proper assessment before whacking anything.
