The day my basement concrete pour turned into a muddy mess

I was doing a small 10x12 slab for storage in my Edmonton basement last November, and the ground was way wetter than I thought. The concrete started pooling water on top before I could finish screeding it, and I had to stop and mix up a dry batch just to soak up the moisture. Has anyone else had ground moisture wreck a basement pour on them?

oh man that is brutal. i feel for you, that's like a nightmare scenario when you're already dealing with cold weather and concrete. the way water just pools up on fresh concrete is so frustrating because you're racing against the clock and nothing seems to dry out. i had something kinda similar happen with a small pad in my garage last spring, ground was like a sponge from all the snow melt and i ended up with this weird crust on top that never set right. your trick with the dry batch is actually pretty smart though, i just ended up having to tear mine out and redo it. basement moisture is such a sneaky problem too because you think it's dry until you start pouring and then bam, it's all sitting on top. hope your slab is holding up okay so far, that kind of moisture can really mess with the cure

Totally agree @the_sarah, had the same thing happen on a patio last fall and it still bugs me.

Wait nobody's mentioned checking the vapor barrier underneath before you poured.
