The 'hide the keys in the flower pot' thing actually saved me once

Okay so in every TV show, the burglar ALWAYS checks under the mat or in the fake rock. But I got locked out of my apartment in Nashville at 2am and that fake rock was my only option. I was SO sure I'd get robbed but nobody ever touched it for 6 months. Does that mean TV logic is wrong about this ONE thing, or did I just get lucky? What's your experience with hiding keys outside?
