Horror movie characters who never just leave the house

I was rewatching a slasher film last night and the power goes out so the family splits up to check the fuse box. In real life, if my power went out I would just sit on the couch and wait or call an electrician. Nobody I know would wander into a dark basement with only a candle. Has anyone else noticed how often characters ignore the most sensible option?

My husband and I watched that same movie last week and I kept yelling at the TV. The part that really got me was when the character hears a strange noise and instead of grabbing a phone and calling for help, they whisper "hello?" and creep toward it. I once heard a raccoon in my attic at midnight and I just went back to sleep and called a pest control guy in the morning. These people would be dead in the first five minutes of real life with their decision making. The scariest thing about horror movies is how nobody owns a working flashlight or knows how to use their cell phone.

Man, that's a good point about the flashlight thing. But here's what always gets me: when they find the fuse box and it's all sparking and weird, why does nobody just say "nope" and wait til morning? Like is there some rule they gotta fix it right then?
