Character in a show just left a loaded gun on the kitchen counter next to their kid

Watching this crime drama last night and the detective gets home, tosses his service pistol on the island right next to where his 8 year old is eating cereal. My wife and I both yelled at the TV. I grew up in a house with hunting rifles and my dad would never leave anything unsecured. This show had 3 episodes where they talked about proper storage too. Has anyone else noticed how often TV parents just leave weapons lying around like it's no big deal?

Wait did the kid even notice it or just keep eating?

Oh man yeah. My nephew ate a handful of birdseed once without missing a beat.

My friend jenna's kid was like 3 and just sat there shoveling fistfuls of dog kibble into his mouth during a playdate. She looked over and he was just crunching away like it was normal cereal, not even a weird face. The golden retriever was just sitting there staring at him like "hey man that's mine" but the kid didn't care. She had to physically pry the bowl out of his hands and he started crying because he wanted more. So yeah, some kids genuinely do not notice or care what they're eating.
