That week I decided to 'fix' my own transmission
Last March I thought I was being smart by saving $1,200 on a transmission rebuild for my 2003 Tacoma. Watched a few YouTube videos, felt confident, ordered a $50 gasket kit. Day three I had parts spread across my whole garage floor and realized I lost a tiny clip from the valve body. Spent four hours at the junkyard trying to match it, then snapped a bolt trying to torque it back. Ended up paying a shop $1,800 to fix the mess I made plus the original problem. The mechanic couldn't stop laughing when he showed me the dented pan from where I dropped it. Has anyone else tried a major repair and ended up paying double?

Did you read that Jalopnik article about the guy who tried the same thing on a Ford Focus?

That Jalopnik guy spent way too much time trying to get a 40 hp bump from a Focus that already handles like a shopping cart. Honestly, if you're dumping money into a car like that, you're better off just saving for something with a real engine, like a used Mustang or even a 10 year old WRX. The whole project seemed like a waste of time and money for minimal gains.
